Russia poses a systemic challenge to Sweden, Europe, and the West as a whole. As long as the Kremlin remains steadfast in its geopolitical ambitions and its current assertive stance towards the outside world, this challenge is unlikely to dissipate. Understanding Russia's internal dynamics, its narratives, and its conduct in warfare is crucial if we are to effectively strategise on how best to contain, restrict, and counter these long-term threats.

For far too long, analysis of the region has been dominated by a Moscow-centric perspective. It is essential that we broaden our viewpoint: countries sharing a border with Russia must be considered on their own terms, while the Russian Federation itself should be understood through the lens of its complex internal dynamics.

At SCEEUS, we focus on Russia’s geopolitical ambitions, foreign and military policies, as well as its domestic developments and internal repressive measures. This encompasses strategies to contain and counter the long-term threat posed by Russia’s aggressive policies, alongside an examination of its elites, military, occupation strategies, domestic developments, repression, and the role of exiles. We also explore Russia’s relationships with global actors; more about our research into the China-Russia relationship can be found here. Under the ‘Voices on Russia’ banner, we invite external experts to discuss key issues that are crucial for understanding Russia’s current trajectory and its future prospects.
