In 1978, Golts received an M.A. in journalism from the department of journalism of the Moscow State Lomonosov University. From 1980 till 1996, he worked at the military newspaper "Krasnaya zvezda" ("Red star") editorial board, 1996-2001 as a military editor for "Itogi" and 2001-2004 as deputy editor-in-chief at "Yezhenedelnyi journal" ("Weekly journal"). In 2005-2022, he worked as deputy editor-in-chief for the website ej.ru.
Aleksandr Golts has also worked as a visiting fellow at the Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) of Stanford University, at Uppsala University and the Kennan institute in Washington.
