After the Election in Georgia – The EU or Russia? Roundtable Discussion with Experts at SCEEUS
On October 26, Georgia held its fateful election. At stake was not only Georgia's future but also the regional balance of power, where Russia’s influence and its capacity to further weaken Armenia's sovereignty and freedom of action could be significantly strengthened.
In connection with the election, SCEEUS organized a roundtable discussion focusing on Saturday's election in Georgia and the road ahead. Among the topics discussed were allegations of electoral fraud, the ruling party's abuse of power, the opposition's shortcomings, the West's mild response, Russia's actions, and possible courses of action for the EU.
The panel included Per Ekman from the Center for Statecraft and Strategic Communications (CSSC), who recently defended his dissertation titled Foreign Policy After Empire: Explaining Georgia’s and Ukraine’s International Orientation from Independence until 2021, and Hugo von Essen from SCEEUS, who recently edited a report on Georgia, The End of Georgia’s European Dream or the End of the Georgian Dream? The discussion was moderated by Jakob Hedenskog from SCEEUS.
